Lee had tried to wait as long as he thought he could before speaking to Hollister. He wasn't looking forward to the conversation. He had assigned himself to an extra Bridge shift this week so that he would have a chance to talk to her.

He waited until the other officers were occupied with tasks before approaching her.

"Lieutenant, may I have a word with you?"

Ingrid didn't respond from the help for a few seconds. She was heavily focused on the screen before her and wasn't in a hurry to leave it. After a few uncomfortable seconds, she spoke, still working the screen with her hands. "Yeah, sure." she said, distracted.

Lee tried not to be annoyed. He had been there before, engrossed in a task and not wanting to split attention.

"Well, Lieutenant, I have a request from our Executive Officer. He realizes that he may not be the easiest person to get along with, but ..." He trailed off. He had been around for a long time, and this kind of personal interaction still bothered him.

"Well, in short Lieutenant, he is concerned about your reaction to him, and wanted me to speak with you about that."

"So he sent you to deal with his problems?" she answered coldly, still moving her hands along the helm but clearly not paying attention to her work. She sighed. "Well....speak to me about it then."

Lee grimaced at the way that she said it. This was not going to be an easy conversation.

"I will attempt to be brief, Commander Prenar would like to know if there is anything that prevents you from dealing with him as professionally as anyone else." He knew it sounded accusing, and immediately rushed to add, "Both myself and Commander Yid have had unfriendly treatment from Cardassians in the past. Neither of us are going to be able to put that behind us very easily, but we are trying to treat the Commander with the respect due his rank and station." He was floundering and decided to stop and see how she responded.

Ingrid pushed back at the anger as best she could. It was welling up powerfully in her chest and she felt like she was going to explode on the middle of the bridge. She pursed her full lips and looked at him. "Well, I don't remember treating him without regard for his rank and station. I will follow his orders and say my 'sirs'." she said with a scowl. "But something tells me that won't be good enough."

Lee tried not to let his frustration grow. This kind of thing was not one he had much patience for. Personnel conflicts always ended up being sticky situations that left him feeling ill for hours. One of the therapists he had seen after his time as a POW had suggested that because his crew had worked with such efficiency and focus that it might be hard for him to deal with people that did not display the same. He had tried these last many years to not let that be the case.

"Commander Prenar expects professional interaction, and nothing more, he is however concerned that your behavior towards him borders on hostile." He had put on the most formal tone he could and it just sounded wrong. He looked Ingrid in the eyes and said,

"Look, you can hate the man all you want, you can wish him dead. But if your behavior is anything less than professional we will have issues. That being said, I will have your back if you act in a professional manner and he takes issue with it. Understood?"

Ingrid turned from the helm and faced him in her chair, looking determined and more than a bit angry. If she was honest, this wasn't doing anything to make her feel more safe and less under attack.

"What exactly do you mean by 'we will have issues' Commander?" she asked, her teeth bared slightly.

"Have issues in that if you are unable to work professionally with the Executive officer that may cause problems. What kind of problems I cannot currently anticipate, but I'm trying to help you avoid that."

"And I already said I'll be professional, sir." she said, pursing her lips. "If that's all you're looking for, then you've got it. Since you're still nagging me, I suspect it's not enough."

Lee tried not to let his head fall, he didn't want to push the issue. Taking a deep breath he looked back at Hollister,

"I certainly hope that it will be Lieutenant."

"As do I, Commander." she said, as she turned back to the console and resumed her work.
