Mission: Episode 1 - Welcome to the Fearless
Location: Science Labs - USS Fearless
Timeline: April 8 2394 1830 hrs

Hadir walked into the Science labs and found Sara hunched over a scanner. Well that was a good sign he thought to himself.

"Lieutenant, how fares you this day? We are due to launch in the morning and I am just making the rounds making sure that we are all ready to leave on schedule. Is your equipment up a running to full specs? What if anything can we expect to not be functional?"

Sara, her hair loosely tied back and with small music buds in her ears (she was listening to something called "Black Dog" by a musical group called Led Zeppelin - An archaic music form from Earth back in the twentieth century that she'd found on the ship's database) didn't hear anything. Though, with that twitch that you occasioanally feel at the nape of your neck when you know you're not alone, she turned and pulled the buds from her ears. She blinked in surprise as she looked up at the Fearless' towering Cardassian XO.

"Pardon, Commander... I didn't hear what you said?" she said. "I'm just checking through the results of the LR scanner, by the way" Sara said by way of explanation, patting the the scanner. "Running a test routine against the feed from a remote atmospheric probe currently in the outer layer of the Gas Giant Proxima, the seventh planet out in this system. It's checking a running feed on the upper atmosphere... A mix of molecular hydrogen, water and ammonia... Basically what you'd expect from your standard Jovian-style planet" she said by way of explanation.

"Excellent, Lieutenant... No, it is I who should apologize I did not mean to disturb you. I am checking in with all of the departments in an effort make sure that we are ready to leave. Our orders are in and confirmed, we are to leave in the morning. Is the Fearless' Science Department ready, or do you need more time to get the lab up to specs?" Hadir, stated matter of factually. He rather admired that the Lieutenant had made herself at home.

Sara nodded, looking around and shrugged her broad shoulders. "Everything's as good as can be expected, better really... What with the start we've had" she explained. "Though, Commander, I can assure you the Science Department is up and running and ready for tomorrow... Whatever it brings"

"Thanks, Lieutenant. If you wouldn't mind performing some preliminary scans of this entire sector. I would like to know if there is anything hiding out there waiting for us. In particular concentrate on the Badlands region. That would be where anything would hide at first. If you could figure out a way that our scans can penetrate the Badlands without entering it that would be even better." Hadir wasn't sure what their orders would be but he knew how to be prepared.

Sara knew the "Badlands" area of space that the XO referred to only by rumour and hearsay though, turning to the LR and data-board she quickly pulled the relevant reference material from the Fearless' database and, using her favourite piece of kit, drew up that expanse of space on the tri-d LR display. The so-called Badlands were, actually, part of what astrophysicists called a Stellar Nursery-type nebulae - unfortunately abundant with spacial anomalies, collapsing gravity fields and the burning gaseous bursts from the forming protostars within. The three dimensional image was quite beautiful, three towering light-year tall gaseous fingers jutting from the nebulae proper.

"It would be best if we sent out either one or, better still, a trio of LR probes when we near the area so to triangulate the scanning data and use the incoming information to whittle-away the 'chaff' so to speak so we can have some idea what's relevant data and anything out of the ordinary" Sara said. "Once inside the various anomalies and gravity fluctuations would render most of our scanners and targeting systems next to useless" she explained rubbing her left neck ridge as she thought the problem through.

Hadir visually followed her hand to her neck there was something oddly sensual about the moment. However, he broke his gaze before it became too lingering. "I will mention your idea to the Captain. Prepare the probes and when the Captain signs off I will let you know and we can launch them."

"There may be other ways to look inside the region though I'd have to do some homework and check the records on file" Sara added.

"Well then, please get started on your homework and forward me a report when ready." Prenar replied.

"Okay, not a problem I'll forward any test results and findings in the database which may assist the mission parameters" Sara said with a shrug. She'd noticed the Cardassian's glance and shivered a little He seems a nice enough guy... though she still had misgivings serving with a Cardassian, and even being on friendly terms was proving tough enough. Anything else was... simply out of the question. She wondered if she should mention it to Prenar though she didn't want to upset him or, even, sound racist or bigoted.

She blinked, shook her head and looked up at the Commander, nodding to herself. "I'll send everything to you" she said and then put the earbuds back in place, the music running, which effectively ended the conversation and got back to work, trying to settle her thoughts. As ever, with a Science problem facing her, her other worries and concerns vanished...
