Hadir was tired, but he had a bounce in his step after his dinner with Ingrid. After all the meetings of the day he felt glad that he was not a Captain as of yet.

When he arrived he saw Master Chief Benford sitting and sipping a cup of coffee. Benford smiled when he saw the weary Cardassian enter. "It looks like you can use a cup." Benford said.

"After a day like today I can use about thirty cups." Hadir replied with a chuckle as he ordered a cup of coffee from the replicator. "Just so many meetings, my brain is mush," he added.

Hadir sat down at the table with Benford. "So, you have been meeting with all of the department heads, checking to make sure that they are ready to leave. All that while the Captain has been tied up in meetings with the top brass. How does it feel to sit the big chair for a while?" Benford said with a grin.

Hadir was rather impressed the Command Master Chief definitely had his finger on the pulse of the Fearless. "You are correct Tom, and you are my last meeting of the day. You sure have your finger on the pulse of the ship. I need to know how the enlisted personnel including yourself are adjusting to the new command structure, and if they are ready to leave in the morning."

"It's my job sir... As for the enlisted personnel... Do I have your permission to speak freely?" Benford asked looking like there was something looming on his mind.

"I wouldn't have it any other way..." Hadir replied.

"Well... Most of the crew is still wet behind the ears and I am not sure any of them have seen any true action before. I am worried that if the ship sees real action then they will just fall apart. As for me... I would be lying if I told you that I did not have any apprehension about serving under a Cardassian Exec. I was a POW during the Dominion War and I know just what Cardassians are capable of. That being said, I have seen how you conduct yourself and you are unlike any Cardassian that I have ever seen." Benford paused to sip his coffee.

Hadir did likewise and thought I will take that last statement as a compliment. I do not intend on being like any other Cardassian.

Benford continued, "I will follow your lead and orders to the best of my ability. However, you must understand that if you ever act not in the best interests of this ship, this crew, or Captain Vela I will be the first one to bring you down."

Hadir took a sip of his coffee and then sighed. "I wouldn't have it any other way Tom. I know that it will take a little getting used to. As there are a few people on this ship that are in a similar situation. I will tell you what I told them. I pledge you my word that I will never betray your trust in me or the Captain's, so help me god." Hadir said that without missing a beat and without blinking. He simply stared right into the other man's eyes. This was good enough for the old master chief who simply nodded after Hadir said it.

Thomas smiled then, "The enlisted folk on this ship are ready, willing and able to serve sir. They will be ready for anything that you or this sector can throw at them."

"Excellent, as we go about our general mission here. I would ask that you keep an eye out for any enlisted personnel that may be prime candidates for warrant officer, or full on officer training. It is something that I would like to work on as a side project. Officer training in the field." Hadir said with interest.

"No one at the moment, however, if anyone asks I will send them to you." Came Benford's reply.

"Tom, I want to thank you for your candor. I can see why Captain Vela chose you for this position. Every so often those of us in charge need to be brought back to Earth as the saying goes." Hadir said.

"If you treat my enlisted men wrong you will have my candored boot up your keister" Benford said with a chuckle, Hadir joined in on the joke.

The two men sat there until late in the evening and exchanged war stories. "Whelp, I best be going to bed. Big day tomorrow launching this ship." Hadir said.

"Yeah, I should hit the sack as well. Do you think that we will succeed." Benford said.

"If half the crew is as good as their Master Chief we will do more than succeed." Hadir replied.

The two men left the mess hall and went their separate ways heading to their individual quarters. Hadir left thinking that not all men were cut out to be officers, but Benford would have made one hell of an officer. Tom left thinking that if this one Cardassian could turn over a new leaf, perhaps all Cardassians could.
